About

Image

Jeremy a self-taught, life-long woodworker and artist who creates organic, abstract sculpture from select hardwoods. Currenlty based in Erie, Colorado, he has been designing and building things for as long as he can remember. For most of his life that creativity centered around furniture, but as his work started to take on more sculptural elements, mainly inspired by the craftsman Sam Maloof, he made the move to completely abandon the utility aspect and concentrate on the artform.

I strive to bring about works that are a mixture of movement, elegance, and complexity. Each piece has its own dimension, energy, and balance, but I also often like to include an element of confusion; not in a way that upsets the viewer, but instead pulls them in closer to investigate, and question, how the piece was created.

While mainly learning through doing, Jeremy did study furniture building at the Penland School of Crafts in 1992. He also learned a lot from watching his father, a very handy and now-retired actuary who did all the maintenance and work on their house when he was growing up. Thankfully, there was always scrap wood in the basement for him and his brother to mess around with.

Artist Statement

My work is about movement. Each piece has its own animation and flow, foregoing symbolism to express life captured in action. I work in wood because I am drawn to the depth, warmth, and soul characteristic of the material. By taking the familiar element of furniture and houses and shaping it in an abstract, novel, and dynamic way, I aim to challenge and rejuvenate the viewer's preconceptions of the medium.

Jeremy donates a portion of the sales of his work to various charities. Some of these are listed below, and he encourages you to visit these links and make your own donation.
